This year marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Rachel Carson, a pioneer of the environmental movement. Rob Nixon holds the Rachel Carson chair in English at the UW-Wisconsin. He says she was something of a reluctant activist.

On your program the interviewee asserts that Silent Spring made a big splash in American culture when in came out in 1962 which I remember. However there was no coverage on PBS as Mr. Dixon asserts, since PBS didn't exist until 1970.
