On Our Minds: Nadia Hashimi

August 10, 2014

This week, we’re thinking about the first novel from Afghan-American writer, Nadia Hashimi. It’s called “The Pearl That Broke Its Shell” and tells the interwoven stories of Rahima, a contemporary Afghan woman, and her great-great-grandmother. What the two have in common is an ancient Afghan custom called Bacha Posh – in which a girl is allowed to dress as a boy. Sara Nics asked Nadia why she chose to tell both women’s tales.
