How's this for a novel premise? Owen Lerner is a pediatric psychiatrist. One day, he's struck by lightning. He survives but he has a new obsession -- with barbecue. That's the premise behind Mary Kay Zuravleff's novel, "Man Alive!" She talks about its inspiration and the book's themes.


We test - or anyway we used to test - our students on their familiarity with obscure vocabulary as a way to measure how broad and how careful has been their assigned and unassigned reading. We don't care whether they use the words in conversation.

I expect the author will have trouble understanding many things others try to teach her.
