Film Critic Mike Sargent on the #OscarsSoWhite Controversy

February 28, 2016

This week’s Oscars ceremony is attracting a lot of attention to this year’s nominees, but it’s the films that didn’t make the cut that are getting talked about on social media. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has come under fire in recent weeks because no significant award nominations went to people of color. The controversy, which sparked the #OscarSoWhite social media campaign, has reignited a public discussion about diversity and discrimination in Hollywood.

Mike Sargent is a filmmaker and a co-founder of the Black Film Critics Circle. He spoke with Anne Strainchamps about the #OscarSoWhite campaign, and racial diversity in Hollywood.
